How to use this lesson: choose a band in the Band Standard bar (left; on a phone, at the top). Every step then shows sentences, exercises and the model for that band. Start at your current band, then try the next one up.

1How many stages? Name them.

The diagram has 6 stages. It is a natural process (a life cycle) shown as a cycle: a hen lays an egg, the chick hatches and grows, and the adult hen lays eggs again.

Phase 1 – Inside the egg (Stages 1–3)

  1. 1
Egg laidAn adult hen lays an egg in a nest.
  2. 2
IncubationThe hen keeps the egg warm while a chick develops inside.
  3. 3
HatchingThe chick breaks out of the shell.

Phase 2 – Growing up after hatching (Stages 4–6)

  1. 4
ChickThe young chick is covered in soft down and grows quickly.
  2. 5
Young chickenProper feathers replace the down.
  3. 6
Adult henThe hen is fully grown and starts to lay eggs.
The diagram does not label the phases. This lesson divides the cycle into development inside the egg (stages 1–3) and growth after hatching (stages 4–6).

Template for students

The diagram shows / illustrates / depicts the life cycle / the stages in the life of a chicken, from the laying of an egg to an adult hen.

8Overview

An overview gives the number of stages and the start and end; higher bands add the two main phases in more precise language. No details (no “21 days”, “6 weeks”, “5 months” or “down”).

Band 4.5 formula

Overall, there are number steps in this process. It starts with V-ing / N and finishes with V-ing / N.
Example – Band 4.5

Overall, there are six steps in this life cycle. It starts with a hen laying an egg and finishes with a new adult hen, so it is a cycle.

Why Band 4.5: Two short simple sentences, basic words (steps, starts, finishes), no phases.

Band 5.5 formula

Overall, there are number stages in the process. The first number stages happen place / phase A, and the last number happen place / phase B. The process begins with V-ing and ends with the + N of + N.
Example – Band 5.5

Overall, there are six stages in the life cycle. The first three stages happen inside the egg, and the last three happen after the chick hatches. The cycle begins with an egg being laid and ends with an adult hen laying eggs, so it is a cyclical process.

Why Band 5.5: Names the two parts in simple words; begins with … ends with …; no numbers or details.

Band 6.5 formula

Overall, there are number stages in the process, which can be divided into two main phases: A and B. The process begins with the + N of + N and ends with the + N of + N.
Example – Band 6.5

Overall, there are six stages in the life cycle, which can be divided into two main phases: development inside the egg and growth after hatching. The cycle begins with the laying of an egg and ends with an adult hen producing eggs of her own, so it is a cyclical process.

Why Band 6.5: A which-clause divides the stages into two phases; nominal phrases (the harvesting of, the production of).

Band 7.5 formula

Overall, the process comprises number + distinct stages, which fall into two main phases – A and B – commencing with the + N of + N and culminating in the + N of + N.
Example – Band 7.5

Overall, the life cycle comprises six distinct stages, which fall into two main phases – development inside the egg and growth after hatching – commencing with the laying of an egg and culminating in the emergence of an adult hen capable of producing eggs, from where the cycle repeats.

Why Band 7.5: comprises · distinct · fall into · dashes for the phases · commencing with … culminating in … in ONE sentence.

Finally, after about five months, the chicken becomes an adult hen and lays eggs.
In the second part, the young chick has soft, fluffy feathers and grows quickly.
After that, at about six weeks, the young chicken gets real feathers.

Exercise 3 – Complete Body 1 (Band 5.5)

Type ONE word in each gap. Look at the diagram for the details.

To begin with, an hen lays an egg in a nest. After that, the egg is kept by the hen for about 21 days, and a chick inside it. Next, the chick breaks the shell and .

Exercise 4 – Put Body 2 in order (Band 5.5)

Choose 1–3 for each sentence.

After this, when it is about six weeks old, its soft down is replaced by adult feathers.
Finally, at about five months old, it is a fully grown hen, and it starts to lay eggs.
In the second stage, the newly hatched chick is covered in soft feathers called down.

Exercise 3 – Complete Body 1 (Band 6.5)

Type ONE word in each gap. Look at the diagram for the details.

The cycle begins an adult hen lays an egg in a nest. Following this, the egg is by the hen for about 21 days, during time a chick develops inside. Once fully developed, the chick breaks of the shell, a process known as .
