The Life Cycle of a Ladybird

Choose your band on the left → learn the stages, formulas and linkers → translate → build the Introduction, Overview, Body 1 and Body 2 → compare with the model.

The Task

The diagram below shows the life cycle of a ladybird.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

How to use this lesson: choose a band in the Band Standard bar (left; on a phone, at the top). Every step then shows sentences, exercises and the model for that band. Start at your current band, then try the next one up.

1How many stages? Name them.

The diagram has 6 stages. It is a natural process shown as a cycle: the adult ladybird lays eggs, and the cycle begins again.

Phase 1 – Early development (Stages 1–4)

  1. 1
Eggs on a leafYellow eggs are laid in groups on a leaf.
  2. 2
    HatchingLarvae hatch from the eggs.
  3. 3
Larva feedingThe larva eats aphids, grows and moults.
  4. 4
PupaThe larva attaches to a leaf and becomes a pupa.

Phase 2 – Adult ladybird (Stages 5–6)

  1. 5
Young adultA pale adult with no spots comes out of the pupa.
  2. 6
Adult ladybirdThe adult is red with black spots; it eats aphids and lays eggs.
The diagram does not label the phases. This lesson divides the cycle into early development (stages 1–4: egg, larva, pupa) and the adult ladybird (stages 5–6).

8Overview

An overview gives the number of stages and the start and end; higher bands add the two main phases in more precise language. No details (no “4 days”, “3 weeks”, “1 week” or “four times”).

Band 4.5 formula

Overall, there are number steps in this process. It starts with V-ing / N and finishes with V-ing / N.
Example – Band 4.5

Overall, there are six steps in this life cycle. It starts with eggs on a leaf and finishes with an adult ladybird laying eggs, so it is a cycle.

Why Band 4.5: Two short simple sentences, basic words (steps, starts, finishes), no phases.

Band 5.5 formula

Overall, there are number stages in the process. The first number stages happen place / phase A, and the last number happen place / phase B. The process begins with V-ing and ends with the + N of + N.
Example – Band 5.5

Overall, there are six stages in the life cycle of a ladybird. The first four stages show its early development, and the last two show the adult insect. The process is a cycle because the adult lays eggs again.

Why Band 5.5: Names the two parts in simple words; begins with … ends with …; no numbers or details.

Band 6.5 formula

Overall, there are number stages in the process, which can be divided into two main phases: A and B. The process begins with the + N of + N and ends with the + N of + N.
Example – Band 6.5

Overall, there are six stages in the life cycle, which can be divided into two main phases: early development and the adult insect. The process is cyclical, beginning with eggs on a leaf and ending with an adult ladybird which lays eggs of its own.

Why Band 6.5: A which-clause divides the stages into two phases; nominal phrases (the harvesting of, the production of).

Band 7.5 formula

Overall, the process comprises number + distinct stages, which fall into two main phases – A and B – commencing with the + N of + N and culminating in the + N of + N.
Example – Band 7.5

Overall, the ladybird passes through six distinct stages, which fall into two main phases – early development and adulthood – and the process is cyclical, commencing with a cluster of eggs on a leaf and culminating in a mature adult that lays eggs of its own.

Why Band 7.5: comprises · distinct · fall into · dashes for the phases · commencing with … culminating in … in ONE sentence.

Exercise 2 – Choose the best Overview

Which sentence is a good overview?

Why? A gives details (4 days, four times) – these belong in the Body. B is a personal opinion and is not in the diagram. C gives the number of stages, the start and the end, and says the process is a cycle.

Exercise 3 – Complete Body 1 (Band 4.5)

Type ONE word in each gap. Look at the diagram for the details.

First, the female ladybird a group of yellow eggs on a leaf near aphids. Next, after about four days, small come out of the eggs. Then, each larva aphids and grows for about three weeks. It changes its four times. After that, the larva holds on to a leaf and becomes a for about one week.

Exercise 4 – Put Body 2 in order (Band 4.5)

Choose 1–5 for each sentence.

At first, it is pale and has no spots.
In the second part, a young ladybird comes out of the pupa.
This is the start of its adult life.
Finally, it becomes a red ladybird with black spots.
It eats aphids and lays eggs, so the cycle starts again.

Exercise 3 – Complete Body 1 (Band 5.5)

Type ONE word in each gap. Look at the diagram for the details.

At the start of the cycle, a group of yellow eggs on a leaf near some aphids. After about four days, the eggs , and small larvae come out. Next, the larvae feed aphids for about three weeks, and they shed their skin four times they grow. After that, each larva attaches itself to a leaf and turns into a pupa, lasts about one week.

Exercise 4 – Put Body 2 in order (Band 5.5)

Choose 1–3 for each sentence.

At first, it is pale and has no spots.
Finally, it becomes a red adult with black spots, which eats aphids and lays eggs, so the cycle begins again.
In the adult stage, a young ladybird comes out of the pupa.

Exercise 3 – Complete Body 1 (Band 6.5)

Type ONE word in each gap. Look at the diagram for the details.

The cycle begins a female deposits a cluster of yellow eggs on a leaf, close to a colony of aphids. Approximately four days later, the eggs into tiny larvae. Over the next three weeks, the larvae feed on aphids and four times as they grow. fully grown, the larva attaches itself to a leaf and develops into a pupa, a stage which about a week.

Exercise 4 – Put Body 2 in order (Band 6.5)

Choose 1–3 for each sentence.

The adult then feeds on aphids and lays eggs, and the cycle repeats.
In the final stage, it develops its red colour and black spots.
Turning to the adult stage, a young ladybird emerges from the pupa, although it is initially pale and has no spots.

Exercise 3 – Complete Body 1 (Band 7.5)

Type ONE word in each gap. Look at the diagram for the details.

The cycle commences with a cluster of yellow eggs being laid on a leaf, in close to a colony of aphids. Roughly four days later, these eggs hatch into tiny larvae, which bear little to adult ladybirds. During the following three weeks, the larvae feed on aphids, four times as they increase in size. Once fully grown, each larva fixes itself to a leaf and undergoes , a stage lasting approximately one week.

Exercise 4 – Put Body 2 in order (Band 7.5)

Choose 1–2 for each sentence.

In the final stage, it acquires its characteristic red colour and black spots and, having fed on aphids, lays eggs of its own, at which point the cycle repeats itself.
Turning to the adult stage, a young ladybird emerges from the pupa, initially pale in colour and without any spots.
